Learning Goal

I can count objects to 20.

By the end of today's lesson, you should be able to touch or point to each object once, say one number for each object, and tell how many objects there are altogether.

What you will learnCount a set of objects accurately from 1 to 20.
What success looks likeYou count every object once and name the total correctly.
Explain the Concept

Counting means matching one number to one object.

When we count, we point to each object only once. Each object gets one number word. The last number we say tells how many objects are in the group.

Count the counters from left to right.

10

The last number is 10. So there are 10 counters.

Counting tip: Move, touch, or point to each object as you count. This helps you avoid skipping an object or counting it twice.
Worked Examples

Watch how we count.

Example 1 — Count 6 stars

1

Start with the first star.

2

Point to one star at a time and say: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.

3

The last number is 6, so there are 6 stars.

Example 2 — Count 14 blocks

1

Arrange the blocks so they are easy to see.

2

Count the first ten, then keep going: 11, 12, 13, 14.

3

There are 14 blocks.
